Matt Calhoun has been a vocalist since early childhood. He was drawn to the music of Ireland Ave Scotland by growing up listening to the folk albums of Bok, Muir, and Trickett.
He enjoyed singing sea shanties in 4 part harmony with his parents and brother on long road trips as a kid. He has been a professional vocalist and musician since 2000. He started playing hand percussion in 1997.
Starting with the African Djembe family of drums around bonfires in drum circles. He played in the Harrisonburg, VA African drum and Dance Choir under the tutelage of Kevin Munro and Madou Dembele.
In 2002, he started playing professionally on the Outer Banks of NC, in the band Watson and Calhoun. It was at this time that he incorporated the versatility of Latin percussion into his repertoire and now primarily plays the Cajon for its depth and variety of sound.
